Ahí voy. The temporal-modal use of ahí in digital interactions

In digital interaction, we have identified a phenomenon of semantic shift of the deictic ahí which, from its usual locative use –Sé que estás ahí (//in that place) fuera–, in certain contexts adopts temporal value, which also acquires a modal-evidential interpretation –Ahí te mandé (I’ve have just sent you…) por facebook lo que tenés que hacer–. Our data are aligned with localist cognitive literature (Gruber, 1965; Jackendoff, 1990, 2019; Lakoff and Johnson, 1986; Lakoff, 1993; Lyons, 1967, 1995; among others) that propose the shift of prepositions and other elements from the spatial field, which is considered more basic, to other more abstract domains, such as the temporal or the modal field. However, as Elvira (2009) argues, the newly-acquired value does not imply the disappearance of the previous one, so that the different meanings −locative, temporal and modal-evidential− coexist in the current usage of the language. The corpus is composed of a selection of WhatsApp and SMS exchanges that are part of the CoDiCE corpus (250,000 words) and data from a survey of Argentine speakers. Our objective has been to investigate the senses that ahí acquires according to its location with respect to the verb (preposed or postponed), the verb tense with which it is combined and the interpretation according to the context in which it is inserted.
