Use of AI
Policies on the Use of AI Tools (AI)
The editorial policies adopted by RASAL Lingüística adhere to international standards of scientific integrity and transparency, such as those established by Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
Authorship and Responsibility
According to COPE, AI tools cannot be listed as authors of an academic publication, as they do not meet authorship requirements: lacking legal personhood, they cannot assume responsibility for the content, declare conflicts of interest, or manage copyright.
Accordingly, authorship of publications may only be attributed to human individuals, who bear full responsibility for all submitted content—including portions that have been generated and/or modified with the assistance of AI tools—and are therefore subject to any sanctions arising from non-compliance with these ethical guidelines.
Human authors must ensure that the material does not infringe third-party rights, does not constitute plagiarism, and does not contain biases, errors, or inaccuracies. The journal requires the submission of an Authorship Declaration as part of the manuscript submission process.
Permitted and Non-Permitted Uses
Manuscripts submitted to RASAL must, above all, be the result of the intellectual, critical, and creative activity of their authors. Accordingly, the use of AI tools for the automation of procedures is considered admissible only when it is carried out under continuous human control and direct supervision, and remains subject to the authors’ judgment, evaluation, and ultimate responsibility.
Permitted Practices
- Data processing or analysis (e.g., assisting with database cleaning, audio-to-text transcription, data annotation, or experimental design), under direct control and supervision. Declaration required (see below).
- Literature searches. All references suggested by AI tools must be verified, as such tools may generate entirely fabricated sources or portions thereof.
- Editing of bibliographic references. Requires verification by the author.
- Style, grammar, and spelling correction. Authorship and responsibility remain with the author.
- Full or partial translation of manuscripts, provided it is supervised by a competent speaker of the target language or carried out by a professional translator.
Non-Permitted Practices
- The generation of manuscripts, sections thereof, abstracts, or any other component of the text by an AI tool is considered inadmissible.
- The journal does not accept manuscripts containing analyses of datasets created wholly or partially using AI tools. The creation or manipulation of images or figures by AI is likewise not permitted. If such data or images are included in articles that, within the journal’s scope, specifically address AI, they will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Statement of Use
Authors must explicitly report the use of AI tools in the preparation of their manuscripts, with the exception of two categories outlined below.
Uses Requiring a Statement
If AI has been used for data processing or analysis (e.g., assisting with database cleaning, audio-to-text transcription, data annotation, or experimental design), a detailed description of its use must be included in the Methodology section of the manuscript. Authors must specify the type of assistance received, the tool used (full name and version number), and the nature of human intervention and supervision, ensuring that the process is transparent, evaluable, and reproducible (i.e., that another researcher following the same procedure would obtain equivalent results).
In this regard, authors should be aware that, where appropriate, they may be asked to provide links to AI interactions (or screenshots, if links are not available) during the evaluation process.
Uses Not Requiring a Statement
- Formatting of bibliographic references
- Style, grammar, and spelling correction
- Full or partial translation of manuscripts
Use of AI Tools During the Peer Review Process
In order to safeguard the confidentiality and authorship of submitted manuscripts, as well as to ensure the human authorship of the review itself, peer reviewers may not upload manuscripts (including associated files, images, or data) into AI tools during the evaluation process.
Consequences of Non-Compliance
Failure to comply with these editorial policies may result in the rejection of the manuscript or, if already published, its retraction. Additional sanctions may also be imposed, including a temporary or permanent ban on submitting new work to RASAL Lingüística.
** The journal’s editorial policies regarding the use of AI are subject to future updates in order to adapt appropriately to developments in AI tools and to ensure continued alignment with evolving standards of ethics and scientific integrity in scholarly publishing.
