Abstract

The following paper aims at studying a set of morphosyntactic and phonological mechanisms characteristic of varieties of the Spanish spoken in Argentina which are used to express endearment. The phenomenon is subsumed into what is known as evaluative morphology and can be observed in different grammatical categories (e.g., hermosho, lindu, cansaditu, okis, te amitu, besis, sipi, bebitu, algunis, etc.). More specifically, the morphemes under scrutiny encode endearment and cuteness/tenderness, values which have not been described or studied thoroughly in the bibliography on evaluative morphology in (Argentine) Spanish (RAE-ASALE, 2009; Fábregas, 2024; Kornfeld, 2012, 2015, 2016, 2021; Bohrn, 2017, 2018; etc.). The article offers a description of the phenomenon in terms of its sociolinguistic distribution, focusing on the affixes and word-formation processes exclusively deployed to express endearment and distinguishing them from other analogous evaluative morphemes (e.g.,-ito). Generally speaking, the exponents <i(s)> and <u(s)> appear to be the most productive ones to express endearment along with phonological changes such as alveopalatazation (/s/→/ʃ/ as in hermoso→hermosho) or affrication (/s/→/tʃ/ as in suavecito→chuavechito). Within the framework of Distributed Morphology (Halle and Marantz, 1993), the paper discusses the status of these morphological exponents in the architecture of grammar and in the corresponding syntactic derivations.
