Abstract

This work studies structures with Subject Duplication (DdS) in Northpatagonian Spanish. DdS structures constitute one single speech act and intonational phrase (IP). Although the two manifestations of the subject (S1 and S2) are co-referential, they exhibit markedly different syntactic, prosodic and informative features. In addition, there is a restriction regarding the linear disposition of DdS. S1 and S2 cannot be adjacent, and at least the intonational phrase nucleus (IN) must occur between them.

The aim of this work is to offer an analysis of DdS. Our main claim is that DdS structures involve a coordination of two clauses, CP1 and CP2. In CP2, S2 moves-A’ to the left periphery of the clause. Then, TP is elided. Our analysis is based on the proposals of Ott & de Vries’s (2016), Truckenbrodt (2016), and Fernández-Sánchez (2017), among others, for cases of right-dislocation (RD). Specifically, we argue that DdS structures are comparable to RD in syntactic, prosodic, and informative terms.
