Flexible relations in mocoví (guaycuruan): morphology and lexicon

This paper explores morphological and lexical properties of Mocoví grammar within the flexible typology framework. It is argued that Mocoví shows rigid and flexible properties at the morphological and lexical domains. Building on first-hand data of natural and elicited speech, I show that diminutive morphology, the enclitic =oʔ and certain lexical elements exhibit flexible behavior as they can be part of the nominal and verbal domains. Although the morphological flexibility is straightforward, the lexical flexibility gives rise to a challenging analytical issue that warrants further research. Mocoví flexible properties also encourage internal and comparative research on Mocoví and Guaycuruan languages to have a better understanding of the intertwined relationship between the morphology and lexicon of these languages.
