This article studies the reference to events by means of event nouns and articulates linguistics with philosophy. It is argued that events are concrete entities in the world and that reference to them, understood as a relation between language use and reality, can be done by an analysis of the determiner phrases (DP) that some event nouns form. To do this, certain general criteria are established to determine which nouns can refer to events and which cannot. Then, deverbal nominalizations and simple event nouns in singular definite DPs in subject position are analysed. Finally, it is concluded that, if the criteria and the syntactic structure of the DP are adequate, it is possible to use those structures to refer to events.
