Abstract

Within the theoretical framework of interactional sociolinguistics, enhanced by considerations from linguistic anthropology, this article focuses on different metapragmatic functions that are manifested through the use of Huarpe phrases on social media. To fulfill this objective, a case study of two social groups that identify themselves as Huarpe is considered. The corpus consists of texts produced in a WhatsApp group and on a Facebook page. The analysis is carried out by applying tools provided by interactional sociolinguistics and situated discourse analysis, which, at the same time, align with pragmatic perspectives that consider cognitive, social, cultural and semiotic aspects of communication (Verschueren, 1999). Among the results at the interactional level, the use of Huarpe expressions as signals of frame (Goffman, 1974) was found. Moreover, Huarpe expressions were found to signal closeness and hierarchy among interactants and to function as politeness tokens (at the interpersonal level) and as identity indexes (at the level of ascription to social categories). The findings of this work provide information about social networks in these Huarpe groups and their relationship with mainstream society. The results also make information available for the design and realization of socio-educational programs.
